One point in two consecutive home games is not much, but if you forget about last Saturday's disappointing performance (1-3 loss to Toronto), yesterday's result against the Eastern Conference leader  was not such a bad one.

The Quakes showed great character and managed to come back twice to earn a deserved point.

The Columbus Crew took the lead by Eddie Gaven after only 4 minutes but Arturo Alvarez managed to bring his team back on track just one minute later with a nice low shot from 18 yards.

The Quakes then spent most of the game trying to contain the Crew's pressure, which they did well even though Steven Beitashour didn't have an easy night trying to contain a very active Robbie Rogers.

However, in the 70th minute, after a moment of confusion in front of his team's goal, Jason Hernandez managed to clear the danger but on the following corner kick, Chad Marshall beat Bobby Burling in the air and, from about 9 yards, placed his header between Joe Cannon and the post that Bobby Convey had left uncovered.

This could have sealed the score, but the Quakes, again, had a great reaction and, after 3 or 4 attempts in the next 10 minutes (including a Cornell Glen goal denied for a questionable offside position), Bobby Convey, one of the best Quakes yesterday again, forced Jed Zayner to illegally take him down. This resulted in an interesting free kick on the left side of the box, about 16 yards from the goal line.

While everybody was looking at Ike Opara at the back post, Convey found Scott Sealy at the near post. Sealy could only deflect it behind him, lobbing all the defenders. Unmarked at the far post, Chris Wondolowski powerfully headed the ball into the net despite a desperate dive from William Hesmer.

The San Jose Earthquakes will ow have a chance to make up for last Saturday's loss at Dallas (Sat. May 5 at 5:30 pm) before taking a 3 week break for the World Cup.
