Philadelphia Union 1-2 San Jose Earthquakes

[Official San Jose Earthquakes Press Release]

CHESTER, Penn. – The San Jose Earthquakes picked up three big points on Saturday night, as they dispatched the expansion Philadelphia Union 2-1, handing them their first home loss in franchise history. The visitors fell behind 1-0 in the 14th minute on a goal by Fred, who was flicked on by first overall pick of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft Danny Mwanga. Fred finished just underneath San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch. San Jose leveled just before halftime, as Chris Wondolowski, the Quakes leading goalscorer, picked out Cornell Glen at the edge of the six yard box, and he finished coolly into the far post for his first goal of 2010.

San Jose was able to catch Philadelphia on the counterattack in stoppage time. Substitute Arturo Alvarez received a through ball from Philadelphia native Bobby Convey and took defender Jordan Harvey one-on-one. He slotted the ball to Chris Seitz’s right for the game-winner and his third goal of his season. Convey tallied his career high eighth assist of 2010 in front of a large group of family and friends. Jon Busch posted six saves in goal and picked up his first win with the Quakes. San Jose hosts club partner Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, July 17 at Buck Shaw Stadium at 1 p.m. PT.

QUOTES

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES HEAD COACH FRANK YALLOP

On the result:

“I was very happy with the demeanor and with the fight of our guys. Philadelphia played well tonight, but we are feeling well coming out with the three points. We knew they were going to throw a lot of people forward and we felt there would be some chances to have one-on-ones and two-on-twos. But you have to make sure you put those chances in and although we didn’t have many, we capitalized on those, so we’ll take it.”

On Jon Busch’s performance:

“Jon had an outstanding game for us this evening and he is a quality goalkeeper who has been in this league for a number of years. When we had the opportunity to acquire him, it was an easy choice. We have two very good goalkeepers, Jon is playing well now and we have Joe Cannon who is a very good goalkeeper, so we are a little blessed at that position. Tonight was Jon’s crowning moment, and hopefully he continues to do well.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES GOALKEEPER JON BUSCH

On the result:

“In the second half, we defended well as a team, sometimes you get a little lucky and the ball just hits you, but I did my job tonight. This is what you get paid for, to make saves and catch crosses. Some games are busy and some aren’t and I’m glad I helped the team to get three points and that is all that matters.”

On his view of Arturo Alvarez’s goal:

“We have been in the situation before where we have been countered at when we pushed a lot of numbers forward, and I’ve been that other goalkeeper thinking, ‘oh boy, here they come.’ At that point you know that one little miscue takes you from earning one point to no points. It was nice to see it happen the other way, and I thanked Arty (Alvarez) as soon as I could, because to get that goal against the run of play was huge. It shows what this team is about. It’s a mentality. We are going to fight, scratch, scrap and I can’t say enough about Ike (Opara), Bobby (Burling), Jason (Hernandez) and Rams (Ramiro Corrales), they were doing the dirty work, blocking shots all over the place. And it wasn’t just them. The midfielders did a hell of a job tonight and it was great to get the goal and take the three points.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES FORWARD ARTURO ALVAREZ

On the win:

“If it wasn’t for (Jon) Busch, we wouldn’t have been in it. Yes I’m happy to score the winning goal, but without him, it would have been a different story. This is a huge win for us on the road. It definitely feels good to come in here and come up with three points and hopefully we can turn things around after this win. We have a tough game coming up at LA in a couple of weeks and we are just going to keep working and keep believing in ourselves and really, anything can happen.”

On scoring the game-winner:

“When I received the ball from Bobby (Convey) and saw that it was a one-on-one, I decided to take my chance and go at him. I created some space and got a shot on goal, I’m just glad it went in. When I let go of the shot, I knew it was going in the goal, I had Seitz beat and it’s a huge win for us. This is exactly what we needed right now.”
