Earthquakes Knock Off Fresno Fuego 3-2 on Saturday Night
FRESNO, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes knocked off the Fresno Fuego 3-2 in a friendly on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park in Fresno with goals from Bobby Convey, Javier Robles and Omar Jessey.
San Jose controlled the game for most of the night, creating many chances throughout the night. Javier Robles had the first quality chance from a set piece in the 14th minute of play, as his shot from about 20 yards out drew a tough save from Fuego goalkeeper Ryan Kenny. Joey Gjertsen had another chance a few minutes later, as he was on the receiving end of a nice low cross by Cornell Glen, but Gjertsen’s effort went above the bar.
San Jose finally broke through in the 37th minute, as Chris Leitch sent in a cross that took a deflection off of Glen, and found Bobby Convey, who ripped a low shot past the diving keeper for the first tally of the night.
The Quakes doubled their tally just seven minutes later, as midfielder Javier Robles scored on a rebound off of a Cornell Glen shot. He placed the ball into the empty net after Glen, created his opportunity from the left flank, and ripped a low shot that deflected off of the Fuego goalkeeper, Kenny.
San Jose made a mass substitution at the half, replacing nine players. The new group started creating chances early as trialist Omar Jessey made a deep run and sent in a low cross that hit Quincy Amarikwa right in stride, but he was called offside.
After multiple chances, including another free kick effort from Robles, it was 3-0 in the 58th minute of play. Rookie defender Steven Beitashour picked out Jessey, who split two defenders in the box, and finished from about eight yards out, with a powerful, low shot into the bottom corner that turned out to be the game-winner.
The Fuego got two late goals from Rodrigo Vianna Ferreira and Mihailo Jovanovich to cut the deficit to 3-2, but San Jose came out on top. The Quakes headed back to San Jose immediately following the match and will play a scrimmage with Cal on Monday, March 1 at West Valley College, before they travel to London from March 4-March 14.
