SJ Frogs - SF Seals
More than just a Derby
Friday May 2, 2008
Tonight at Jame Lick High School (7:30pm) the two highest ranked teams in the Bay Area after the Earthquakes will be battling in a game which is more important for both teams than just because of the area's PDL leadership.
For the Frogs, as Aaron Castro told us 2 weeks ago (Read article) the beggining of the season will be very important for the 2 objectives of the season. He is claiming that the team wants to win the League, and a good start is necessary to achieve this. They also want to qualify for the US Open Cup and the first five games of the Division will count towards this objective (the best team of the Division after 5 games qualifies for the Cup). It is also the first game for the Frogs in their brand new stadium at James Lik High School and Jorge Espinoza (San Jose Frogs' head coach), when he talks to the players before the game, will probably insist on the importance of showing a good performance to their fans.
From the Seals point of view, even though nobody claims they think they will win the League, ambitions will probably have grown after last week's great performance at Fresno against the Fire, winners of the Division last year (Read Match Report on USL official website). It will be important for them to show they are able to reproduce this kind of performances...And with their initial win, they now are directly threatening he Frogs for the US Open Cup qualification.
With the Earthquakes receiving Dallas tomorrow night, it is an intense week-end of high-level soccer starting in the Bay Area!
